Here are some statistics about what could happen if you do not have a reliable backup plan in place. Most of them are from the United States of America but in New Zealand the figures shouldn't be much different:
- 6% of all PCs will suffer an episode of data loss in any given year.
- 30% of all businesses that have a major fire go out of business within a year. 70% fail within five years.

For more than 50 years, businesses have utilized tape-based backup schemes. While proponents tout low media costs and portability, tape backup increases the amount of time and effort needed to administer backup and recovery tasks.
With a tape backup solution, how frequently are the tapes sent off-site as part of a disaster recovery strategy? Even if tapes are sent off-site on a daily basis, the tapes are usually sitting in the tape drive or a shipping container for 6-12 hours after the backup completes before they are transported to another location. This leaves an organization exposed during that time.
Having a tape backup is better than having no data backup at all - about half the time.
Failure rates of tape backups are very high and have been estimated at 50% or greater, depending on the source.
In many cases, a backup tape drive simply provides a false sense of security, and doesn't provide the needed data recovery in a time of crisis.

DVD-RAM has been found to be the more reliable format for backing up data and research has shown CD-ROM's to be unreadable after only one year. |
