The following compares other backup solutions with our MyBackup Remote Backup Service... No Backup Plan At All | Here are some statistics about what could happen if you do not have a reliable backup plan in place. Most of them are from the United States of America but in New Zealand the figures shouldn't be much different:
- 6% of all PCs will suffer an episode of data loss in any given year.
- 30% of all businesses that have a major fire go out of business within a year. 70% fail within five years.
- 31% of PC users have lost all of their files due to events beyond their control.
- 34% of companies fail to test their tape backups, and of those that do, 77% have found tape back-up failures.
- 60% of companies that lose their data will shut down within 6 months of the disaster.
- 93% of companies that lost their data center for 10 days or more due to a disaster filed for bankruptcy within one year of the disaster. 50% of businesses that found themselves without data management for this same time period filed for bankruptcy immediately.
- Companies that aren't able to resume operations within ten days (of a disaster hit) are not likely to survive.
- Simple drive recovery can cost upwards of thousands of dollars and success is not guaranteed.

| Tape Backups | For more than 50 years, businesses have utilized tape-based backup schemes. While proponents tout low media costs and portability, tape backup increases the amount of time and effort needed to administer backup and recovery tasks.
With a tape backup solution, how frequently are the tapes sent off-site as part of a disaster recovery strategy? Even if tapes are sent off-site on a daily basis, the tapes are usually sitting in the tape drive or a shipping container for 6-12 hours after the backup completes before they are transported to another location. This leaves an organization exposed during that time.
Having a tape backup is better than having no data backup at all - about half the time.
Failure rates of tape backups are very high and have been estimated at 50% or greater, depending on the source.
In many cases, a backup tape drive simply provides a false sense of security, and doesn't provide the needed data recovery in a time of crisis.
Tape Drives are completely dependent on human interaction. Someone in your organization has to manually configure and load tapes, perform server backups, verify the authenticity of the backup, and transport the data backups offsite every day. |
| CDs and DVDs | These is a more modern backup media than the traditional tape backup but reliability is sometimes questioned and the technology is quickly changing.
DVD-RAM has been found to be the more reliable format for backing up data and research has shown CD-ROM's to be unreadable after only one year. |
| USB Flash Drives | There have been reports of a 300 percent year-on-year increase in cases of USB drives that have "suddenly stopped working," as a result of "faults, misuse and an increasing number of poorly manufactured devices on the market."
Would you trust your critical business data with such an unreliable medium? |
| MyBackup Remote Backup Service | The advantages of the MyBackup service are many. Here are just a few...
Convenience
- Automatic, set and forget. As long as your computer is on and has access to the internet the backup will happen according to your preset schedule. No need to hang around after everyone else has knocked off or shut down the network before closing time.
- You will receive an email notifying you of the satisfactory completion of the backup each night, if requested.
- If you need help you can talk to a real person who will even be able to remotely access your computer to help if you are having trouble.
Reliability
- Once you have set the backup schedule the computer looks after it all. No need to remember which type of backup you should be doing tonight, or even if tonight is a backup night.
- MyBackup will check that the backup has actually made it to our server as it was sent. Not many tape or Zip systems actually check the data to make sure it has actually been stored correctly.
- Reliability. If, for some unforeseen circumstance, the backup can't be fully processed one night (eg. your ISP is down) then MyBackup will pick up where it left off next time and finish the last backup before starting the next.
Versatility
- You can set MyBackup to backup just one set of files or to scan your system for any data files that may have been created/changed and back them all up, or anywhere in between.
Security
- Because you are the only one who holds the encryption key, you are the only one who can access the data in the files. Not even Florida Technology staff know what's in them.
- Security. Storing backups off site is one of the most important factors of good security for your data. MyBackup automatically stores your data off site, but it is easily accessible to you from your computer if (heaven forbid) you should need it.
- MyBackup automatically stores not just last night's backup but keeps over a month of backups at your fingertips so that if you discover a problem that has been dormant in your system for a few days you can still go back to a clean version to restore.
- There is no spyware or other nasties hiding in the software to steal information about you or your clients.
- ALL contact with our server is initiated by your Client software. There is no way for your system to be accessed by our server so your system controls the process and remains secure.
Cost Effective
- Starting at only $25 per month (GST inclusive) that's less than $1.00 a day! Just add up the cost of doing it in house – employee (or your) time which is money, equipment, other work not done, training, etc. Not to mention the load off your mind.
Easy To Use
- MyBackup has been designed with a windows-like interface and an extensive help so that even a computer novice can operate the Client software. Florida Technology staff are also available to assist with the installation or restores if you wish.
