Frequently Asked Questions...

Why backup?

Most small businesses put their lives on the line every night and don't even realise it. With businesses depending more and more on the data stored in their computer, proper backups are becoming much more critical. You insure your buildings and vehicles to protect you against loss so surely you should backup your data to prevent loss also.

What is a remote backup?

Remote backups work basically like regular backups, with one important difference. Instead of sending backups to a tape or portable disk drive attached to the computer, remote backups work by sending data over a regular internet connection to another computer safely off-site. It does this (usually) at night while the business is closed and nobody is using the computer. And what's better is that is all completely automatic.

What if we already have a tape backup system?

Using a tape backup system and a remote backup system offers the best of both worlds. Critical files, like billing, customer contact files and databases can be kept on the remote backup system. While, the tape system can be used to create a full backup of the entire system once or twice a month, instead of on a daily basis. The tapes and drive will last longer and require less maintenance. The remote backup system can provide a quick and easy way to retrieve critical files and databases without the hassle of searching through tapes.

What if we already have a Zip drive?

Frankly, we believe that it is not optimal for most users to only use a zip or other removable disk media for backup. A remote backup service is completely automated and has the required file redundancy to protect important data. The only safe way to use a zip drive for backup is to have three disks and make the same backup three times. That way when one of the disk fails you are still protected.

How long will a remote backup take?

Customers with high-speed internet connections should find this service comparable with tape drives. Dial up users will be able to do incremental backups in thirty to sixty minutes. For dial-up users with a large amount of data to backup, the initial backup can take several nights to complete. We recommend backing up the most important files first and then selecting other files as the backup progresses. Or, the initial backup can be run over the weekend.

Onsite, Offsite - What's The Difference?

Basically, remote backups work like regular tape backups, with one important difference. Instead of sending backups to a tape drive or other media attached to the computer being backed up, a remote backup sends encrypted file data over the internet to a computer file storage system safely off-site.

This usually happens at night while your business is closed and nobody is using the computers. It's completely automatic. In fact, you may forget it's working every night.

Why Are Remote Backups Considered More Beneficial?

The data is immediately stored off-site using an automated backup system. Also, only an internet connection is needed. Completely eliminating the need for expensive backup equipment and media. And, since the system is automated, manual labor is eliminated.

How Secure Are Remote Backups?

Very. You, and you alone have access to your data files because MyBackup encrypts your data prior to transmission to our offsite backup server. Military-grade encryption technology and a user-defined password (encryption key) ensure that nobody, including employees of Florida Technology Ltd, can access your data. Compare this to the total lack of security on most tape and zip drive systems.

How do I know the backup has worked?

After each backup and transfer to our server is complete, you will automatically be sent an email saying that it has worked and with details of how much of your quota is currently being used. We also recommend you practise with a restore of your data to prove to yourself that what you are expecting to be backed up actually is being backed up.

What is encryption?

Encryption is basically a mathematical formula that scrambles a data file. And the only way to unscramble it is with the encryption code which only you know.

What tasks are required to run a daily backup?

None! The actual backup process itself is fully automated. Once you have configured the time, frequency and list of files to be backed up into the client software, the actual backup will take place automatically on schedule. All you have to do is keep your PC turned on when you leave the office in the evening.
